Perspectives on health and cognition in old age: Why we need multidisciplinary investigations

2014

Maintaining health and cognition is vital to ensure that individuals can live autonomously up to and including old age. One of the most pressing topics in today’s aging societies is how to delay impairments in health and cognition in old age for as long as possible, with a particular focus on cognitive and physical functioning as these are of particular importance to maintain autonomy. This edited volume presents four different perspectives on developments in current aging research relating to health and cognition in old age. Using health as overarching concept, the volume addresses different components of health such as physical functioning, cognitive health, mental well-being, self-regula…

The Urban Built Environment, Walking and Mental Health Outcomes Among Older Adults: A Pilot Study

2020

The benefits of walking in older age include improved cognitive health (e.g., mental alertness, improved memory functioning) and a reduced risk of stress, depression and dementia. However, research capturing the benefits of walking among older people in real-time as they navigate their world is currently very limited. This study explores cognitive health and well-being outcomes in older people as they walk in their local neighborhood environment. Residents from an independent living facility for older people (mean age 65, n = 11) walked from their home in two dichotomous settings, selected on the basis of significantly different infrastructure, varying levels of noise, traffic and percentag…

Strawberries and Cream: The Relationship Between Food Rejection and Thematic Knowledge of Food in Young Children

2021

Establishing healthy dietary habits in childhood is crucial in preventing long-term repercussions, as a lack of dietary variety in childhood leads to enduring impacts on both physical and cognitive health. Poor conceptual knowledge about food has recently been shown to be a driving factor of food rejection. The majority of studies that have investigated the development of food knowledge along with food rejection have mainly focused on one subtype of conceptual knowledge about food, namely taxonomic categories (e.g., vegetables or meat). However, taxonomic categorization is not the only way to understand the food domain. We also heavily rely on other conceptual structures, namely thematic as…

Ramadan Observance during Pregnancy in Germany: a Challenge for Prenatal Care.

2018

Abstract Introduction Fasting during Ramadan while pregnant has been shown to have long-term negative effects on the offspringʼs physical and cognitive health. Even though most Muslims do not believe pregnant women are obligated to fast during Ramadan, fasting rates of up to 87% have been reported for pregnant women. No data exists to date about Ramadan adherence and behavior in Germany. Methods The Mainz Study of Ramadan and Pregnancy surveyed pregnant Muslims and new Muslim mothers in Mainz between October 2016 and January 2017 and collected information on Ramadan adherence and behavior. We also collected data on personal characteristics and opinions, to identify determinants of fasting u…
